THE 2007 AWARD WINNERS
About the Jurors:
Nancy Barch is a born
and bred Philadelphian. She remebers from the 8th Grade on,
art was extremely important in the Philadelphia school system.
There were many trips to the Philadelphia Museum, Moore Art
Institute and the Fletcher Art Memorial during her high school
days, all stimulating her interest and ability to pursue art
as a career. At present she is a signature member of the American
Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society and three
other national art groups. When speaking of her own work,
Nancy says, "My work, at this point in time, is constantly
evolving. I am much more responsive to my emotions than to
subject matter. The marks and brushstrokes are immediate,
spontaneous and personal. I find that working in one medium
is not sufficient to express all that I need to say. Visually,
I am always searching to find materials, techniques and mark
making that will make it possible to communicate with the
viewer."
Douglas Wiltraut lives
with his wife and two children in Northeastern Pennsylvania
in an 18th century house once owned by his grandparents. His
very successful career has been widely acclaimed by articles
in AMERICAN ARTIST and THE ARTIST magazines, along with examples
of his work in ten books. His own thinking about his paintings
follows: "There is a beauty to the passage of time and
the effects it has on objects and people. Timeworn textures,
a face with a stroy to tell, the patina of life are all things
I like to portray. The passage of time is something we all
have to deal with. I almost always paint these objects and
people in a strong raking sunlight with elongated shadows,
which results in what I refer to as a 'special visual moment',
a moment when the ordinary is elevated to something memorable."
The Jurors Statements
The jurors of Selection made
our task easy. There were many possible contenders for awards
due to the high quality of work submitted. The various approaches
to the watercolor medium were well executed, and over all,
combined to create a strong show. Although we couldn't give
everyone an award, being accepted into a show of this caliber
should be its own reward."
